Free business support in Southampton (and how to actually use it)

There is a British Library Business & IP Centre on the first floor of Southampton Central Library. Free market research databases, free IP clinics, free studio space for product photos. Almost nobody knows.

The reason this directory exists is that starting a small creative business in this country means assembling your own support from fragments, and the fragments are not advertised. The single most useful one in this area is a room in a library that most people walk past.

BIPC Southampton

The Business & IP Centre is on the first floor of Southampton Central Library, set up in 2022 as a partnership between Southampton City Council and the British Library. It is part of the national BIPC network, which means a library card here gets you resources that would otherwise cost thousands.

• Market research databases. Commercial datasets on market size, consumer trends and company information — the sort of thing that is normally sold by subscription. Free to use on site.
• One-to-one clinics. Free appointments on business planning, intellectual property, market research and cashflow. Actual specialists, not a leaflet.
• IP support. Direct access to British Library IP resources, which is the cheapest way to research whether your business name is already someone else's trade mark.
• A camera and studio space. Free, for product shots and headshots. If you sell online, good photographs move more work than almost anything else you could spend a day on.
• Event and meeting space, plus a programme of workshops.

How to get the most out of a clinic

Advisers can only work with what you bring. Arrive with the actual numbers — what you sell, what it costs you to make, what you charge, how many you sold last month. An hour spent on a concrete pricing problem is worth five spent on a general chat about the business.

What else is worth knowing about

• Your local council's economic development team. They hold grant information and workspace listings that never make it onto a search engine. Which council you are in matters — the SO postcode area covers Southampton, Eastleigh, Test Valley, Winchester, New Forest and Fareham, and their offers differ.
• The British Library BIPC national network, if you are outside Southampton — there are centres and local partner libraries across the country offering the same kind of thing.
• Other makers. The most reliable source of information about which markets are worth doing, which suppliers deliver and what the going rate is for a commission is somebody already doing it. That is part of why this directory lists people by area.
